Steps for Establishing and Maintaining Your FOOLS Chapter Web Site
Step 3 – Linking the Domain Name with Your Hosting Company
Part three of this series brings us to a cross roads. By now you have a domain name, www.yoursitename.com, and your server space acquired. In this article I will cover the basics of getting the two items to work in synchronization.
If you just completed either one of the purchase it may take up to 24 to 36 hours for the information to propagate. Once we complete the changes we are about to guide you through it may take another 24 hours to be available. So keep this in mind that this is by no means and instant process.
First step is to navigate to your domain hosting company site and login to your account. Remember that if you make any changes to the login information you need to document it in your spreadsheet. Once you are in you account for the domain name you are looking for the link to control where your DNS, Domain Name Server, points to. It make take a little poking around you account to find, as each domain name company has different layouts.
After navigating to the area of your account you will given the choice to update both the “A” and “B” server names, or server name 1 and server name 2. At this point you need some very specific information from you hosting company. You may or may not be able to get this information from your account area. Try looking around to see if they publish in any of the self help area's the DNS information. If they do not you will need to contract the technical support and ask them what the DNS primary and secondary server names are for your account.
Once you have located or been provided then names enter them in to the fields in you domain companies fields. Once you click the submit or enter button it may take 24 hours or more for the servers to complete the process. This is important to know as this will also effect your FTP connection as well as typing in your new web site name in your favorite internet browser.
In the next part I will cover the very basic layout of your new website.
